Blue Review - From the Quarterly Newsletter (October 2009)
By Kristen Dunmeade
Congratulations to Mrs. Holly she was married on 9/19/2009! The students have enjoyed viewing Mrs. Holly’s pictures from her wedding. I am so proud of all the students in blue room and all of the staff. Everyone is doing a wonderful job! This fall we have many wonderful things we will be learning. We will be getting ready for Alternative Assessments. We will be working more on our social skills using our Socialville Club. We will be learning basic social skills, for example: eye contact, tone of voice, more on self talk for a calming option, and more conversation with other peers. The social skills will be practiced throughout the school day. In sign language we now have a huge vocabulary. We will be learning animal signs and we will be using sign language more to have more conversation in the classroom. This is to give the students another opportunity to communicate. In the Taking Care of Myself unit, we have finished the first part, hygiene. The books were sent home over the summer. These books are useful at home and should be utilized for the students to practice these independent skills at home. We now have started on the second part, health. All students have mastered applying deodorant and brushing teeth at school. These skills can also be practiced at home to increase the student’s independence in life skills. As a group we do math menu and together we are learning how to read a menu, manage money, make money, and make purchases. Our students who participate in vocational program have done a wonderful job! Again I am very proud of all the students including the staff.
