Garden Update!

E-mail Print PDF

Our garden is doing really well. The plants have grown tremendously. We have started to harvest some of the chives, sorrell, cilantro, parsley, basil, oregano, spinach and collard greens. The harvested vegetables are given to the Assumption Outreach Center to be distributed to the community as part of their food pantry program. So far the fresh vegetables have been a great hit! The Autism Academy students, Toledo ZOOTeens volunteers, the Assumption Center Staff and the Autism Academy Staff have done a wonderful job taking care of all of the plants. Check out the pictures below to see the progress.

The Snoezelen Multisensory Room Is Open!

Announcing……
The Autism Academy of Learning’s New State-of-the Art
Snoezelen Multisensory Room!
We are excited and proud to announce the opening of the school’s new Snoezelen Multisensory Room! We have transformed a bare and empty room off the third floor gymnasium into one filled with sensory delights, including two colorful bubble columns, fiberoptic combs and sprays, vibrating bean bag chair, soft rocker, lighted infinity tunnel, projector with various visual effects and aromatherapy. Rubber tiles were placed to make a soft and easy-to-clean floor.
Snoezelen rooms combine sights, sounds, textures and movements to provide a calming and relaxing environment. The Snoezelen environment will provide the students of the AAL an enjoyable and therapeutic setting that will help them in processing sensory information, increasing their attention spans and reducing self-injurious and self-stimulating behavior as well as aggression. This will help our students to be more focused and more able to concentrate on academic and vocational instruction.
We could not have built this room without the support of our community, parents and staff. The funds used to build the Snoezelen Room came entirely from grant funding, corporate donations and the school’s PTO/Fundraising efforts. Thank you to our PTO/Fundraising Chair, Rachel Cisco for her tireless efforts. The total amount raised and spent on the room equaled approximately $16,500.
We sincerely thank the following organizations for
their most generous donations:
Grant Awards:
Toledo Rotary Foundation
Ronald McDonald House Charities
Wal-Mart Foundation
Coroporate Gifts:
Sanofi Aventis
Fundraising:
AAL PTO/Fundraising
(Thanks to all those who sold and bought fundraising items)
Federal Funding:
ARRA (federal stimulus) Funds
Donated Items:
Mark Lafferty, Principal (stereo)

Everything is planted and we have sprouts!

E-mail Print PDF

All of the students worked very hard to finish planting our vegetable garden. It has been one week, and we already have sprouts in our corn bed and bean bed. The classes are working hard to transform our urban vegetable garden into an outdoor classroom. Soon we will be posting information on the type of garden we have created, the types of vegetables we have planted, and how plants grow. We are all very excited with the progress we have made so far. Keep checking back for the latest news.

School Garden

The Autism Academy of Learning has teamed up with the Toledo Zoo ZOOTeens Program and Toledo Grows Program to build a vegetable garden on school grounds.

Objectives:

  1. Create an outdoor classroom environment focused on the following areas:
    1. Plant growth/Life cycles
    2. Understanding sources of food with an emphasis on a diverse and healthy diet
    3. Care for the environment
  2. Vocational activities involving plant care, landscaping, and similar employment opportunities
  3. Provide AAL students with the opportunity to participate in social interaction with non-disabled peers.
  4. Provide AAL students with the opportunity to participate in community service by giving fresh vegetables to the Assumption Outreach Center to be distributed to local families in need.

We have a variety of plants such as tomatos, corn, peppers, potatos, cucumbers, and more! Check back often for new pictures of our garden project.
